My mom recently passed away and while cleaning out the attic, I came across my old Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Pedal Car from the late 60s. It was popular when the first movie came out.
At first I was going to keep it as it brought back fond memories. Then, someone came to the house to purchase some old toys of mine and they have been begging me to sell them the car.
The pedal car is is good shape. It has a few scrapes as you can imagine, and part of the front mirror assembly is broken. Otherwise it looks great!
Any ideas?
HI there your chitty chitty bang bang pedal car is made by a company called Pines from Italy.Made in 1968 for the film. These cars are very rare and only turn up now and then. The last one i saw sold made £2.500 and was not as good as your! i hope this helps Regards Phil.
It seems that Chitty pedal cars were sold under several names. I’ve seen references to both Pines and Triang, and to the fact that Mobo Toys imported the cars from the Italian company, Pines, and sold them in the UK.
Your Chitty looks rather like mine does. Does it still have the molded plastic red “seat cushion” in place, and the cap on the gear lever?
My parents gave my Chitty to me when I was about 2, and when I promptly fell over the wings trying to get into it, my dad removed them. They may still be tucked between a couple of beams of his workshop.
Over time, my brother and I managed to break Chitty’s steering wheel, remove the plastic handle from the gearshift lever, break off the windshield, and partially disconnect the pedal mechanism so it dragged on the floor. Like most kids, we had no concept of playing gently with our toys, which is why the toys that survived are so valuable now.
What remains of my Chitty has been stored in the rafters of my parents’ barn for many years. We hope to someday be able to restore her, or to pay someone else to.
I am desperately looking for a Chitty Pedal Car, am willing to pay good money. Our 4 yr old son is chitty mad, we don’t mind one for restoration. Been looking for months. regards
Kerry
I am looking to buy this car for my son. Please let me know if you ever want to sell it. Great little car.
Thanks,
Jonathan
Great comments. This car is in pretty good shape actually. The front windshield I also broke as a kid, and of course it has a few scrapes. But my son was just in it the other day riding around in it and it works just fine. I actually had goggles that went with the car, but someone bought them from me a while back. Probably should have kept them to go with the car. My dad had this in our attic for the past 40 years, but it still looks nice. I am open to offers for the car. You can email me at ronniebabs@aol.com.

Hi guys
Might sound a bit strange, but I have made Chitty replica for my daughter - its electric, not quite finished, wings to be sewn and installed this week and windscreen in the next few weeks. A few pics of teh first drive are here:- http://evalbum.com/3030
(my wife will build a website ASAP)
I’m about to build a replica of Truly Scrumptious’s car too, for my younger daughter, same set up; electric, but will be slightly more adjustable so bigger children can drive it too.
If anyone is after a replica I can make them to order, and to specific requirements. I can even made pedal or petrol versions with fully automated wings. Real wood veneers and leather used throughout.
I was/am a mad Chitty fan, and honest, truly, my daughters are watching the film right now!
Please drop me a mail at christophergrilli at yahoo.co.uk if you have any questions.
Come and visit and let your kids have a test drive!
Best regards
Christopher
My older brother had a petal car just like this one as a child. i didnt know that any still existed. considering the few scuffs that you described it looks like you’ve kept it in great shape. Im going to forward this to my brother. i’m sure it’ll bring fond memories.. thankx
Hi, the cars were made by Pines of Italy. You can find the maker’s name on the rubber tires and also on the underside of the chassis. Also the radiator cap is really a wine barrel tap. Not too many of these cars have survived in their original condition. Beside my own I only know of three others near mint condition owned by other collectors.
I can’t believe all the detail folks know about this car. Unbelievable. I’m so glad I posted here.
By the way, anyone have an idea as to its worth. I’ve had offers from folks as high as $1,500 but I figured they were pulling my leg so I really never bothered writing back.
I have a chitty on ebay now, check it out…thanks, Tony
