For generations pedal cars and ride on toys have been a magical part of childhood and enduring appeal for these classic toy cars is testimony of the amount of fun and joy they bring to kids.

Kids are little people on the go with energy to burn and manufacturers have been making pedal cars and ride ons with our children in mind for decades. The joy these pint sized cars were for kids yesterday, is just as magical today as they will be tomorrow

The endless hours of fun these very unique toy cars provide, lies in there ability to empower a child`s imagination and free their creativity to explore all sorts of adventures.

From toddler to pre-teen there is a pedal car or ride on to match your child. From classic hot rod roadsters to fire trucks, even exotic luxury Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and Mercedes. The fun doesn`t stop just with pedal cars. The extended family has grown to include pedal trains, pedal planes, and pedal tractors.

Yes pedal cars and ride on toys, like the automobile has made a home for itself in world history. Whatever the adventure, you can watch your child put the pedal to the metal with 1KHP=1 kid horse power and 2 foot lbs. of torque.  You and I know, kids just want to pedal for fun.

Now a pedal car query…. The year was 1965.  A pedal car was designed after its full sized parent…What is the model name of this world famous  car?

rare Austin Junior Forty (J40) pedal car. Built by disabled Welsh miners as a government sponsored make work project. The cars were built from metal off cuts and painted the same way as the actual A40 cars.

I was doing a little research history on pedal cars the other day because I was considering buying one as a gift. These wonderful little pedal cars and ride on toys can be traced as far back as the late 1800s.

Pursued through the 1900s in the United States,  England, France and Australia, where these pedal toys were wide spread.

In the USA, pedal cars were made by companies such as Toledo with American National Automobiles and Murray with Steelcraft, both based out of Ohio. Model T Roadsters are a familiar pedal car ride with the Steelcraft stamp on it .

In the UK, it was Line Bros., with familiar Tri-ang who made the most popular pedal car in England. The J-40 modeled after the 1949 A-40. In France, there was Bon Marche` selling them before the war and Eureka after the war. Down under in Australia there was Cyclops whose pedal car designs were based on full sized US models at the time.

As adults it can be very enjoyable surfing through history of these great little pedal toys, because for a lot of us it brings back cherished memories, when we were kids and our own special pedal car ride.  I am sure our children and grandchildren do not contemplate history of the sweet ride they just received.  You and I know, kids just want to pedal for fun.

Now for a pedal car query — What does the J in J-40 stand for?

We welcome answers in the form of comments if you choose.

1965 Shelby-GT 350 Pedal Car

When I bought a mustang pedal car for my son Steven`s birthday, I knew what I was buying, or did I?  The morning of his birthday he had already gathered his friends around before I could retrieve this great little pedal toy from the garage.  I started to bring my boy his present when my neighbor showed up, coffee in hand.   As he eyeballed the pedal car he nearly dropped the coffee.

“That’s a Shelby”, he shouted!  “Yeah”, I said, I bought a mustang pedal car for Stevie.  ”That`s not just a pedal car” he recanted, “that’s a 1965 Ford Shelby GT-350″.   As he went on his passion reminded me why I bought the pedal toy for my boy.  I silenced my neighbor by saying “Ok, I get it”!  These cars are the only fully licensed pedal cars by Carroll Shelby and Ford Motor Company and come with a certificate of authenticity included.

This incredible little pedal car is tricked out in full Shelby colors. Designed after the world famous 1965 Ford Shelby G.T. 350, this pedal car sports the distinctive hood and side panel striping, Shelby “Cobra” gas cap, and an imprint of Carroll Shelby’s signature on the rear deck.  The paint finish is lead-free baked enamel.  It has chromed hub caps, headlights and tail lights.

It has solid 8 inch rubber wheels and stamped steel construction.  This pedal car will be treasured by kids and collectors for its authenticity and quality for years to come. When I finished, Steven and his friends stood gaping at me.  My son’s voice broke the silence as he said, GEEZZ, DAD.

As I watched my happy boy, pedal his mustang up and down the drive way with his friends running behind him, an image played in my mind. Maybe Stevie is the next Steve McQueen and he will be doing a remake of Bullitt.

The Charger is mine son!

Hot Rod Pedal Car

Rather awesomely saving my old hot rod pedal car, now that I am a new dad, this might be the last chance I’ll have to play with my hot rod without having to share.  So I brought the hot rod pedal car down and started snapping.

Maybe I am just oversensitive during the first few days, but I cannot get this spectacular hot rod pedal car out of my mind.

I will love to see this thing driven by my kid and watch him park the hot rod.

That’s what I call coooool!

Police Cruiser Pedal Car

One thing that kids of all ages love to do, is pretend to drive.  From the time they are old enough to simulate a steering wheel in the stroller, until they are old enough to really drive a grown up car, kids love to play driving and pretend they are going someplace. Whether they want to go to work like mommy or daddy does, go on a trip to grandma’s house, or drive to the store for some candy, play driving has been a favorite among children since there were cars to drive.

Now, there is a pedal car that kids can really “drive”. The Police Cruiser Pedal Car will make it seem like they are in a real car, and they can really pedal to go someplace.  Even in their own back yard, kids will love this little car.

Sporting a dramatic black and white finish, this Police Cruiser pedal car means business.  The stunning retro-style graphics (designed from historical sources) and working red light and open-able trunk are sure to make the pedal car a hit with kids and collectors alike.

This pedal car is all ready to go out and keep the neighborhood safe!

Mercedes SL Pedal Car

Thanks to some deep cover investigative reporting, which no doubt involved several highly uncomfortable exchanges over the Mercedes SL pedal car - don’t forget the cream!  It has been discovered that Mercedes SL is indeed the envy of the neighbourhood.

Oh man, if money grew in my backyard, a real Mercedes SL would look good in the driveway.  That would be like Christmas morning every day!

If you were having any doubts about whether you are demographically appropriate for the new Mercedes SL class pedal car, let me clear them up right now:
