I was doing a little research history on pedal cars the other day because I was considering buying one as a gift. These wonderful little pedal cars and ride on toys can be traced as far back as the late 1800s.
Pursued through the 1900s in the United States, England, France and Australia, where these pedal toys were wide spread.
In the USA, pedal cars were made by companies such as Toledo with American National Automobiles and Murray with Steelcraft, both based out of Ohio. Model T Roadsters are a familiar pedal car ride with the Steelcraft stamp on it .
In the UK, it was Line Bros., with familiar Tri-ang who made the most popular pedal car in England. The J-40 modeled after the 1949 A-40. In France, there was Bon Marche` selling them before the war and Eureka after the war. Down under in Australia there was Cyclops whose pedal car designs were based on full sized US models at the time.
As adults it can be very enjoyable surfing through history of these great little pedal toys, because for a lot of us it brings back cherished memories, when we were kids and our own special pedal car ride. I am sure our children and grandchildren do not contemplate history of the sweet ride they just received. You and I know, kids just want to pedal for fun.
Now for a pedal car query — What does the J in J-40 stand for?
We welcome answers in the form of comments if you choose.

When I bought a mustang pedal car for my son Steven`s birthday, I knew what I was buying, or did I? The morning of his birthday he had already gathered his friends around before I could retrieve this great little pedal toy from the garage. I started to bring my boy his present when my neighbor showed up, coffee in hand. As he eyeballed the pedal car he nearly dropped the coffee.
“That’s a Shelby”, he shouted! “Yeah”, I said, I bought a mustang pedal car for Stevie. ”That`s not just a pedal car” he recanted, “that’s a 1965 Ford Shelby GT-350″. As he went on his passion reminded me why I bought the pedal toy for my boy. I silenced my neighbor by saying “Ok, I get it”! These cars are the only fully licensed pedal cars by Carroll Shelby and Ford Motor Company and come with a certificate of authenticity included.
This incredible little pedal car is tricked out in full Shelby colors. Designed after the world famous 1965 Ford Shelby G.T. 350, this pedal car sports the distinctive hood and side panel striping, Shelby “Cobra” gas cap, and an imprint of Carroll Shelby’s signature on the rear deck. The paint finish is lead-free baked enamel. It has chromed hub caps, headlights and tail lights.
It has solid 8 inch rubber wheels and stamped steel construction. This pedal car will be treasured by kids and collectors for its authenticity and quality for years to come. When I finished, Steven and his friends stood gaping at me. My son’s voice broke the silence as he said, GEEZZ, DAD.
As I watched my happy boy, pedal his mustang up and down the drive way with his friends running behind him, an image played in my mind. Maybe Stevie is the next Steve McQueen and he will be doing a remake of Bullitt.
The Charger is mine son!

Children and toys go hand in hand.
Toys worth buying include toys which encourage positive growth in children, both mentally and physically. It is worth buying toys which have the potential to be used over and over again and which are not a one time craze. Pedal cars are such toys. Pedal cars encourage safe outdoor play and are always good buys.
An example of a good pedal car is the L’il Red Train.
Now you can chug along in the Lil’ Red Train. Everyone will know you’re coming with the working headlight and bell. The L’il Red train feature an all steel construction, lead free powder coat paint, authentic steel cattle guard, high traction non slip tires, three position adjustable pedals and a padded seat.
All aboard…….. This train is ready to pedal!

There is nothing like passing down your favorite toy to your own children one day.
One type of toy that has been very popular for passing down through the generations is pedal cars. There is just nothing like having a pedal car and to enjoy seeing your own child playing with it.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, which is why parents often beam with pride when a child begins to emulate them. Kids love to be busy. Parents can parlay that boundless energy into some quality time with mom and dad. When dad works on home improvement projects, small children relish the chance to help out with a plastic hammer.
A pedal car fosters the child’s helpful instincts even further. By instilling early responsibility, parents lend their children a sense of accomplishment. The pedal car is a fun way to get some exercise, and it encourages kids to appreciate the outdoors even more.
Your little girl is sure to stand out in the neighbourhood riding a pink pedal car!

Introducing the fabulous Brum Pedal Car. This very popular car was developed by Ragdoll and became hugely successful overseas. The Brum Pedal Car is based on the English Cartoon favorite, Brum, the great English car character from Big Town. Brum is a “Good Guy” Superhero Comic Character that catches crooks and saves people in distress, internationally known by way of a children’s TV show from the UK. Based on Brum, the Superhero, your child will love cruising his or her own Bigtown in one of these pedal powered cars, catching crooks and saving the world.
The Brum Pedal Car fits 2-6 years old and is built with 18 gauge metal. Sturdy and durable just like the little Brum car character. This pedal car is powder coated with lead free paint for durability. It is of solid steel construction, all steel wheels, rear mounted spare, with duralast solid rubber tires, running boards, gold hubcaps, three position pedal adjustment, black metal steering wheel and gold hubcaps.
What really makes this pedal car stand out from the rest is that it has the Brum dashboard, a red padded seat, two Brum license plates, a real moveable crank handle and headlight shrouds.
This is a one of a kind pedal car that will be extremely popular across the country - Awesome!
